Challenges

Challenge Rules

  • To enter the challenges you must be a member of SSS at the time of the attempt / track log date.
  • Challenges are to be carried out on non-powered paragliders and run from February 1st to February 1st.
  • All air law must be followed and adhered to while attempting the challenge. Respect for other air users and the communities with which we fly in should be a given at all times.
  • Please do not jeopardise any of our sites or our good standing within our local community by being reckless or thoughtless in the attempt of any of these challenges. Needless to say if you do, your flight will be dis-allowed anyway and worse, you will be threatening the use of the area as a paragliding destination for all of your fellow pilots.

The Coastal challenge.

There is a cash prize of £250 for the 1st person to make a single continuous flight from Penmaenbach (DMS - 53 deg 16'58.1N, 3 deg 51'41.5 W, DD - 53.28281 N, 3.879475 W) to Nant Gwrtheyrn (DMS - 52 deg 58'4.1N, 4 deg 27'29.4 W, DD - 52.96781 N, 4.458167 W).

You must take off within 1km of Penmaenbach's northerly waypoint as given and land within 1km of Nant Gwrtheyrn's waypoint or get a trackpoint within a 1km cylinder of it (should you wish to fly on). A full track log must be supplied as an IGC file and sent to sites@snowdoniaskysports.co.uk with a title of 'Coastal challenge'.

The Sword to Sword Challenge

Here's one for all you H & F fans. In the carpark directly by the lake in Llanberis there is a large metal sword- "llafn y cewri".

The challenge is to be the fastest person with a full track log to leave the sword, travel by foot to the top of Elidir Fach (DMS - 53 deg 7'48.9 N, 4 deg 5'17 W, DD - 53.13025 N, 4.088056 W), take off, land in the fields by the lake and make your way on foot back to the sword, where your time ends. You must land in the designated field as shown in pink on the Elidir site guide and MUST NOT land anywhere else in the village to achieve this task. There are three age groups, under 40's, over 40's and over 50's. Again you must supply a full track log that should be E-mailed to sites@snowdoniaskysports.co.uk with a title of Sword to sword.

The Steve Nash Challenge

This challenge is named in memory of Steve Nash who was one of the first pilots to complete this challenge.

The challenge is to be the quickest in any one year to traverse the 15 peaks over 3000ft in Snowdonia. These are Yr Wyddfa, Crib Y Ddysgl, Crib Goch, Elidir Fawr, Y Garn, Glyder Fawr, Glyder Fach, Tryfan, Pen Yr Ole Wen, Carnedd Dafydd, Carnedd Llewelyn, Yr Elen, Foel Grach, Garnedd Uchaf and Foel Fras. There is a 500m radius around all the peaks and the waypoint file can be downloaded from here. You must walk, run or fly to each peak, get a track log of the route and get at least one trackpoint within every cylinder. At the end of the year the person with the fastest time will get the Steve Nash trophy for the year with their name and time engraved on it. Tracklogs must be sent to sites@snowdoniaskysports.co.uk with a title of Steve Nash Challenge.
