This field is owned by the National Trust. Access to this field has been carefully negotiated with the National Trust and certain conditions have been agreed.

  • The National Trust have agreed to 36 x take offs per year. Prior to your visit, please notify this site's officer through the form on the right and provide details of the names, number of Pilots, BHPA numbers and also date of visit.
  • Strictly BHPA members only

The field used for take off is the access path down to Harlech Beach from the A496. This field is on the corner of the A496 just before the turn off for Llandanwg Train Station. The take off field is owned by the National Trust and permission to use it as a take off has been carefully negotiated. This field is managed in line with the National Trust’s ‘Land and Nature strategy’, where the objective is to develop a species rich grassland, with a diverse range of grasses and wildflowers.

There is a small grassy clearing as you step through the gate onto the field with a public bench (as shown on the bottom of the left photograph).

This can be used to lay out your paraglider. Please take care not to trample on the vegetation and use only the public footpath to launch, whilst also giving due consideration to other site users.

This take off is very technical due the road, walls and rotor from the cliff. Winds above 16mph become challenging and winds above 18mph are for experienced Pilots with exceptional ground handling skills only.

There is no top landing at Harlech. Land on the beach only but check the tide times. Do not attempt to top land in the fields to the left of take off. We do not have permission and also they are in extreme rotor. There is an obvious path back up the cliff from the beach leading back to take off. Circa 10 mins to walk back up.

Getting to take-off:

There is a Pay & Display Car Park behind Harlech Castle. If this is full, drive to the junction (with the castle behind you), turn right and drive through the High Street for approx. 400 x yards where you will find an alternative Pay & Display. Walk along the A496 with Harlech Castle behind you, past the Toyota Garage and 50 yards before the turn off for Llandanwg Train Station is the take off area. There is a public access gate with sign post as shown in the picture below.

  • Small takeoff, with very short run off.
  • Stone wall right in front of takeoff
  • Rotor in any wind speed is possible

Safety:

This take off is very technical due the road, walls and rotor from the cliff. Winds above 16mph become challenging and winds above 18mph are for experienced Pilots with exceptional ground handling skills only.

If you are unsure of your ability to launch safely here, please use the Merthyr Farm takeoff instead.

Do not use this site for a top to bottom flight in light winds- you are likely not to clear the stone wall with predictably dire consequences.
